The Pain Treatment Services of Children's, Beth Israel-Deaconess and the Brigham and Women's Hospitals offer a combined fellowship in acute and chronic pain management. The fellowship is approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology to fulfill the requirements for eligibility for the Certificate of Special Qualifications in Pain Management.
Each year the fellowship accepts three anesthesiologists who have completed an approved residency in anesthesiology. Each of these fellows is primarily associated with one of the three member institutions. The fellow spends six months at the primary institution and has two rotations of three months each at the other hospitals. During the latter two rotations, fellows rotate back to their home hospital one day per week to continue to follow their long-term patients.
While at Children's Hospital, the fellow is an integral part of the Pain Treatment Service. In addition to participation in acute pain management, the fellow assumes primary responsibility for patients in the Chronic Pain Management Clinic to follow throughout the year. Clinically based or laboratory research opportunities are also available.
