Children who are suspected of having active tuberculosis (usually tuberculous pneumonia) are often hospitalized to begin treatment with several anti-tuberculosis antibiotics.
The Department of Public Health is notified and arrangements are made for them to oversee medication administration after the child leaves the hospital.
- Active TB Patients
Once they are allowed to go home, active TB patients are followed in our outpatient clinic with monthly physician and nursing visits.
- Inactive TB Patients
Children who are infected with tuberculosis but do not have active disease are treated with an oral antibiotic for nine months and are followed monthly by a clinic nurse until they have completed their treatment. This is a standard recommendation by the Center for Disease Control and helps prevent TB from progressing to active disease.
Blood work (liver function test monitoring), chest radiographs and vision screening are performed during all follow-up visits when necessary.
