Stereotactic radiotherapy is often performed by having the patient wear a frame positioned over the head with an intra-oral dental appliance to help secure it in position. The immobilization frame used at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) Stereotactic Radiation Therapy Center assures a high success rate because the dental appliance is well-tolerated and accurately relocatable. The Department of Dentistry at Children's Hospital Boston works with BWH to fabricate these appliances.

Fabrication of these dental appliances requires the patient to have an impression taken of the upper and lower teeth. This process is coordinated by the Stereotactic Radiotherapy staff at the BWH, often working with the patient's local dentist to obtain the impression. The impression is usually sent to our dental laboratory where the appliance is fabricated. BWH staff coordinate the appliance fitting appointment with the patient's radiotherapy appointment.
