The Pain Treatment Service invites you to attend The Comfort Zone

The Pain Treatment Service invites you to join a one-day retreat to help children and their parents learn how to better manage chronic pain. The Comfort Zone retreat includes a child group and a parent group running simultaneously and emphasizing the mind-body connection, offering non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical strategies for improved pain management.

Child Group

This intervention is designed to:

  • Help each child develop his or her own individual coping plan to facilitate improved emotional and physical functioning. Discussion topics include:
    • An introduction to behavioral pain management strategies including guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation and biofeedback;
    • Developmentally appropriate education that focuses on the ways pain functions in the body; and
    • A forum for discussion of the common obstacles that often cause challenges at home and school.

Parents Group

This intervention is designed to:

  • Provide parental support for managing a child with chronic pain;
  • Discuss ways of advocating and supporting their child in various settings; and
  • Educate parents about the strategies their child will learn to use at home and school.

The retreat is open to youth ages 10-17 with chronic pain and requires the participation of at least one parent or caregiver, but up to two are welcome.

The total cost is $240. Financial support may be available.
