Children's Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) Program is actively involved in the development of novel dietary approaches and progressive clinical protocols to treat childhood obesity. In addition, the OWL Program is engaged in a variety of studies that seek to improve the treatment and ongoing management of overweight children and adolescent.

Type 2 Diabetes Health Values Study

The Optimal Weight for Life Program is one of several Children's Hospital Boston clinical programs recruiting patients for the Type 2 Diabetes Health Values Study. (Other programs recruiting for this study include the Diabetes, Endocrine, Lipid, and One Step Ahead Programs and the Adolescent and Young Adult Medical Practice).

Dr. Erinn Rhodes, a faculty member in the OWL Program, is the Principal Investigator and Dr. David Ludwig, director of the OWL Program, is a Co-Investigator. This study will evaluate the quality of life of children with or at risk of type 2 diabetes and their and their parents' preferences for important health conditions associated with type 2 diabetes and its treatments.

The study is recruiting adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age with or at risk of type 2 diabetes from the participating Children's programs. Screening for the study can be done in person at the time of a scheduled visit or by telephone.The study involves separate, one-time, approximately 30-60 minute in person interviews for the child and a parent/guardian The child and parent/guardian each receive a gift certificate for participation.
