Clinical Services (Neuropsychology Program):
About Us
Image The Neuropsychology Program at Children's Hospital Boston was established in 1975. We developed the program to meet the growing demand for more sophisticated assessments of children with brain and central nervous system damage or dysfunction.

Our team consults with a wide variety of professionals in medical, educational and mental health settings. We are also involved in short-term interventions with children and parents around issues of adjustment and behavioral management related to neuropsychological deficits.

Who we see

We see children and teens of all ages, as well as some adults with developmental or medical disorders dating from childhood.

Children are referred from both within and outside Children's by neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, psychiatrists, psychologists and other physicians and nursing personnel.

Assessment

Our team evaluates a variety of different issues, including:

  • neuropsychological strengths and weaknesses
  • cognitive and socio-emotional abilities
  • control processes
  • motor/sensory and academic skills
  • neurobehavioral disorders
  • neuropsychological versus psychological disorders
  • educational planning
  • psychosocial adjustment and development
  • behavioral changes from medical/surgical treatment
Additional information on assessments

What is neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is a specialty area of psychology that applies knowledge of brain functioning in understanding how children think, learn and manage their behavior.

Learning, memory, organization, attention and the regulation of emotions are all areas that may be affected by a neuropsychological problem. We, therefore, work with patients, their families and medical team to assess the patient's abilities and help promote their personal, social and educational functioning.
