Clinical Services (Eating Disorders Program):
About Us
History of the program
Sara Forman, MD
Director Sara Forman, MD
In the 1980's, the Division of Adolescent Medicine set out to address the growing incidence of eating disorders in its teen and adolescent populations. Under the leadership of Dr. Robert Masland, former Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, the Division began to offer help to young patients with these disorders. Social worker Lexie Eliot, psychiatrist Eugene Piazza, MD, and Joan Mansfield, MD, also helped develop this program.

Over the last 10 years, the Eating Disorders Program has become more formalized. And today, our medical, mental health and nutrition providers
see more than 200 new adolescent eating disorder patients every year.

Our services
Today, we provide a wide range of comprehensive services for patients and physicians, including:
  • Consultation
  • Medical evaluation (comprehensive physical exam, laboratory testing)
  • Medical treatment (nutritional rehabilitation, counseling, medication, hormonal therapies)
  • Mental health consultation
  • Nutrition evaluation and counseling
  • Psychiatric evaluation
Locations
Our patients were originally seen only at the Boston main campus and at our Lexington satellite site. But with the growth of Children's satellite sites, the program has been extended to our locations in Peabody, Waltham and Weymouth.
Collaboration
Our healthcare providers give guidance to many providers in the northeastern United States and beyond. Providers from the outpatient Eating Disorders Program and other members of the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine have helped develop inpatient clinical guidelines for children who are admitted to the hospital for eating disorder-related medical needs.

Our providers also consult with the National Eating Disorders Screening Project. They have advocated for insurance coverage for eating disorders at the Massachusetts Statehouse and give frequent presentations on eating disorders throughout New England.

Mission
The mission of the Children's Hospital Outpatient Eating Disorders Program is to provide high quality, interdisciplinary, comprehensive care to youth and their families who are struggling with eating disorders.
