Diagnostic Ultrasound
The Division of Ultrasound is part of the Radiology Department at Children's Hospital Boston. We take pride in our unique ability to produce cross sectional diagnostic images without the use of sedation or radiation in a friendly, nurturing environment especially tailored for children.
What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a wave of energy used to make an image that allows your doctor to see cross sections of the inside of your child's body. It produces no radiation and is painless. Your child will not need any sedation.

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves and their echoes. The sound waves go through your skin and reflect or "echo" in a different way off of each part of your body, such as bone, fluid and soft tissue. These different kinds of echo form a picture that we can see on a screen. The technique is similar to the echolocation used by bats, whales and dolphins, as well as SONAR used by ships and submarines.

Examples of ultrasound images:
Ultrasound of a normal kidney in a newborn infant.
Ultrasound of a normal brain in an infant in the NICU.
