Cranial ultrasound: An open fontanelle is required so that examinations in infants older than about 9 months may be limited.
Hip ultrasound: This should ideally be performed at about age 6 weeks, younger ages may result in falsely abnormal results. Due to shadows created by the ossified femoral head, it is often impossible to obtain diagnostic results after about age 6 months.
Spine ultrasound: The younger the better! Ossification of the posterior elements of the vertebral column obscures views of the spinal cord. After about age 6 months, information obtained by ultrasound is limited.
