Regarding the timing of screening ultrasound examinations:
Cranial ultrasound is performed on patients with an open fontanelle who are generally less than 1 year old.
Screening hip ultrasound is usually performed when the infant is about six weeks old. Imaging in the immediate newborn period may lead to falsely abnormal results. Patients over 9 months of age are rarely suitable for hip ultrasound due to obscuring shadows created by the ossified femoral head.
Spine ultrasound ideally should be performed as early as feasible. Neonatal scans yield the most information. Nonetheless, most studies are diagnostic if performed before 6 months of age. After 6 months, ossification of the posterior elements of the vertebral column limits visualization of the spinal cord.
