The pediatric dental staff of the Department of Dentistry at Children's Hospital Boston offer care to patients who present special challenges. Our staff is well-trained and experienced in providing dental care for children who have difficulty cooperating due to age, medical status, developmental disabilities, intellectual limitations, or other special needs.

At Children's, we routinely take care of these exceptional patients who require unique care for a variety of dental problems. Our successful treatment of these patients includes using techniques such as communicative behavior management, nitrous oxide analgesia (laughing gas), conscious sedation and treatment under general anesthesia in an operating room setting.

Any patient desiring treatment at the Department of Dentistry must first be seen for an initial consultation. At this appointment, the child will be evaluated medically and dentally and all treatment needs will be discussed. A plan for dental care based upon the patient's special needs will be formulated, and treatment options will be presented so that parents or guardians are well-informed and may then make a decision regarding future care. Patients are scheduled to return for dental treatment at another visit.
