Boston Children's Hospital at Lexington provides special surgical care in a family-centered environment. As at our other locations, we provide a caring, compassionate and kid-friendly surgical team including expert pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and staff.
If your child is scheduled for day surgery, he or she will not need to stay in the hospital overnight and will be able to go home the same day.
Day before surgery:
A nurse will call you before surgery to obtain a health history and answer any questions you have. If you have not received a call by 1 p.m. the day before your child's surgery, please call the Day Surgery office at 781-672-2300 and ask to speak to a nurse.
If your child's surgery requires anesthesia, an anesthesiologist will see your child on the day of surgery.
Day of surgery:
Please arrive at the hospital at least 1 hour before the scheduled surgery so you can register in the Day Surgery Unit and see your surgeon and anesthesiologist.
Leading up to surgery:
You may stay with your child at all times before surgery. You may also be able to stay with your child during the start of anesthesia (also called Parent Present Induction). Your child's anesthesiologist will talk with you about this program. If you are pregnant, please tell the nurse or anesthesia provider. Once your child is asleep in the operating room, someone will bring or direct you to the Family Waiting Room. The surgery will take place as close to the scheduled time as possible.
During surgery:
In some circumstances, a parent may be present with their child in the operating room while their child is falling asleep under anesthesia. During surgery, parents are asked to wait in the Family Waiting Area.
After surgery:
You will meet and stay with your child in the recovery room (Post Anesthesia Care Unit, or PACU). There, nurses will answer any of your questions and talk with you about how to care for your child at home. Telephone numbers will be provided for you to call if you have questions when you return home. A nurse will call you the morning after surgery to see how you and your child are doing.
