Urologic Tumors Program

Who we are

The Urologic Tumors Program at Boston Children's Hospital cares for children with tumors of the kidney, bladder and testicles in collaboration with Children's Oncology Department.

Urologic tumors include Wilms' tumor, renal cell carcinoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and testicular tumors. If you child is diagnosed with one of these tumors, our oncologists and radiologists will thoroughly evaluate him and guide you through the next steps and options for treatment.

How Children's approaches urologic tumors

A team of pediatric oncologists and specially trained and certified oncology nurses will care for your child. Children needing round-the-clock cancer care are treated at Children's, while outpatient visits are scheduled at Dana-Farber's Jimmy Fund Clinic. Pediatric experts from more than 30 subspecialty areas at Children's provide any supplementary care your child may need.

The Urologic Tumors Program works collaboratively with the Children's Oncology department, ensuring that your child receives the combined experience of the entire Children's network.
Children's has a 60-year-old partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute that provides the most current childhood cancer treatment options, reports some of the best outcomes in the country and oversees multiple childhood cancer survivor programs.
Children's specialists are actively involved in pediatric cancer research and use the latest clinical techniques to improve health outcomes and quality of life for your child.

Treating Wilms? tumor

The most common type of kidney tumor children develop is called Wilms' tumor. Approximately 500 children, mostly between 2 and 4 years of age, are diagnosed with Wilms' tumor each year in the United States. Most children are successfully treated, usually by partial or full surgical removal of the tumor (depending its size and location).
