Flower About Us
Image The Children's Hospital Neighborhood Partnerships (CHNP) at Children's Hospital Boston was initiated in June 2002. We developed the program because of the need for better mental health support for children and families in Boston. For example:
  • 16 percent of Boston high school students have contemplated suicide, and 12 percent have made a suicide attempt.
  • The wait time for outpatient mental health services in the city has increased by 200 percent in the last five years.
  • Lack of insurance coverage, language barriers and costs make mental health care even more difficult to access.
  • Nationwide, most children who need mental health services do not receive help.
  • 70 percent of children who do receive mental health services are treated in schools.
Our Goals
The CHNP is one of four service programs in the Department of Psychiatry at Children's. Our goal is to promote children's social, emotional and behavioral health and to establish long-standing resources for children, families and their communities.

Our program has three strategic priorities:

  1. To expand access to mental health services for unserved and underserved children and families.
  2. To improve the quality and effectiveness of mental health services by providing training, support and professional development opportunities for practitioners from diverse disciplines.
  3. To help partner organizations better respond to community needs by increasing knowledge, skills and awareness about mental health.

Outreach

Our school- and community-based programs also feature a strong commitment to:

  • Prevention
  • Culturally diverse services
  • Services available to all - according to need and regardless of ability to pay

Our diverse staff of psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists and child educators provide services that are personalized to each community.

Every year, the CHNP provides:
  • Counseling and case management services to more than 2,600 young people and 400 parents.
  • Training and consultation to almost 650 educational staff and trainees from 13 Boston Public Schools, two additional school sites and several community-based organizations and health centers.
