Outcomes and Evaluation

To measure the effectiveness of the CHNP, we have collected data linked to our three strategic priorities:

  1. Access
  2. Quality
  3. Capacity building
1) Increasing access to mental health services

The main premise of the CHNP is to increase access to mental health services by placing those services in community settings where children and families can easily and comfortably reach them.

CHNP Program Services Summary: 2005-2006
Partner Sites: Total Participants Across Sites/Services:
Schools - 18 Children and youth - 3,400
Community Health Clinics - 6 Parent/families - 400
Community-based Agencies - 6 Clinical and educational staff/trainees - 1600

2) Improving quality of services

One important way that the CHNP improves the quality of care for children and families in need is through prevention and training programs: to reach children and families at risk before serious disorders emerge, and to help clinical and educational staff learn more about how to identify and respond to signs of distress or disorder.

3) Building capacity

In training nearly 1600 educational and clinical staff and trainees, we provide essential opportunities for professionals in various disciplines to increase their knowledge and skills related to mental health. These formal training opportunities are further reinforced and translated into practice through ongoing consultation provided by the onsite CHNP clinicians.

Our qualitative data collection reaffirms that our services are making a difference in the ability of our partner agencies to meet the needs of their clients. In interviews at the start and end of each program year, we ask administrators to define systemic goals that are linked to CHNP services, and to describe the impact of services in their setting:

Testimonials
"Currently, over a third of our student population is receiving... mental health services in school. This would not be possible without support from the CHNP... CHNP has helped integrate a mental health perspective into the school... the number of crises has dramatically decreased... Teachers are more aware of emerging problems and students and families know they can access services within the building... CHNP is an integral part of our school community..."
- Principal, Dorchester

"...CHNP has provided consultation assistance by means of systemic support, faculty professional development and leadership for program development focused upon improving our school climate... has led numerous professional development workshops with the entire staff... a new discipline referral process has been implemented, teachers have reported improved work conditions, improved professional communication and a comprehensive school climate initiative has been integrated into our school's Whole School Improvement Plan... [this] could not have been achieved without the support of our partnership with CHNP."
- Principal, Roxbury

"We don't know how you do what you do, and we could not have done it without you."
- Principal, West Roxbury
