Mitochondrial Program
Image The Mitochondrial Program in the Department of Neurology at Children's Hospital Boston evaluates and treats children and young adults with mitochondrial diseases.

As most of the problems affecting patients with mitochondrial diseases are neurologic in origin, our patients are
assessed by trained neurologists.

The Mitochondrial Program physicians are involved in the evaluation of cases of suspected mitochondrial disease and also the treatment and coordination of medical care of patients with proven mitochondrial disease. Selected patients with high blood lactate levels are enrolled in the dichloroacetate (DCA) treatment protocol.

Families with children who have been diagnosed with mitochondrial disease are referred for genetic counseling in the Division of Genetics, headed by Mira Irons, MD.
