In recognition of Dr. John Shillito's longstanding commitment and dedication to the field of pediatric neurosurgery, the Neurosurgical Service at Children's Hospital Boston has established the John Shillito Staff Associate/Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery. Throughout his 37-year tenure until his retirement in 1995, Dr. Shillito gained tremendous respect for his clinical skill, his wise and compassionate care of patients, and his dedication to teaching. Dr. Shillito served as a direct link with the founders of Pediatric Neurosurgery in North America, having been a trainee of Drs. Franc Ingraham and Donald Matson; both Chiefs of the Children's Hospital Neurosurgical Service..
The Shillito Fellowship supports a young neurosurgeon during a year of post-graduate clinical training. During this intensive year, fellows are exposed to a full range of pediatric neurosurgical conditions, with a heavy emphasis on neoplastic, vascular, and congenital disorders of the brain and spine. In addition, Shillito Fellows participate in clinical research projects: an important step for future academic leaders in the field of pediatric neurosurgery.
