In commemoration of Dr. John Shillito's longstanding commitment and dedication to the field of pediatric neurosurgery, the Neurological Service and Children's Hospital Boston have created the John Shillito Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery.
The fellowship supports a young neurosurgeon while he or she participates in a year of post-graduate clinical training. During this intensive year, fellows are exposed to a full range of pediatric neurosurgical diseases, including moyamoya syndrome, brain tumors and epilepsy. In addition, Shillito Fellows participate in clinical research projects, an important step for a future academic leader in the field of pediatric neurosurgery.
Throughout his 37-year tenure until his retirement in 1995, Dr. Shillito gained tremendous respect for his clinical skill, his wise and compassionate care of patients, and his dedication to teaching. Dr. Shillito served as a direct link with the great teachers in pediatric neurosurgery, having been a trainee of Drs. Franc Ingraham and Donald Matson, both Chiefs of the Children's Neurosurgical Service and pioneers in the development of pediatric neurosurgery.
Prospective applicants must have satisfactorily completed an approved neurosurgery residency in the United States or Canada prior to beginning the staff associate position, although this requirement may be waived in exceptional circumstances. All applicants must obtain a fellowship match number. A personal interview is required for all staff associate applicants.
