Sonia Garcia BSN, RN, CPN is a Staff Nurse II on 9 East, inpatient medicince. Sonia shared with us her journey to Children's.
What attracted you to CHB?
What really attracted me to CHB was the way MaryEllen Green (colleague at Spaulding Hospital, who came to CHB) spoke about the nurses she worked with and the care that was provided here especially on 9 east. She was certain that I would enjoy it just as much as she did. Although I was afraid of transitioning from adults to pediatrics, she reassured me that it would be an easy transition just like it was for her. I decided to apply maybe because I needed a change in direction and I must admit it was the best decision ever. I really enjoy the nurses I work with and I am happy to see the diversity of our floor staff and patient population. This June will be my 12th year anniversary and I am very proud of that.
I feel that what keeps me here are the amazing people I work with on a daily basis.
What have you done during your career here?
I have always worked nights but I have grown both professionally and clinically during my time here. I am a level II staff nurse and CPN certified. I have acquired an array of clinical and leadership skills and I feel that I have become a great asset to the floor on the off shifts. I was part of the multicultural nurses forum when it initially started as well as the MA Chapter for Hispanic Nurses during the time that they were being held here at CHB and Eva Gomez was trying to get it up and running.
Other successes you’d like to share?
During the past few years I was nominated for the Latino Heritage Award as well as for the Daisy Award both of which I am very proud of. I was also a member of the STAND Panel as a member of the Multicultural Forum during which we greeted and spoke to students from Bunker Hill Community College in an attempt to get more minority students into the nursing field.
What keeps you here?
I feel that what keeps me here are the amazing people I work with on a daily basis here on our floor.
