Appointment, Review and Advancement
Initial appointment and reappointment to the professional nursing staff is made through the Department of Nursing appointment process.
Professional nursing practice is then evaluated annually, and includes:
- Performance review with the responsible supervisor
- Performance self-evaluation
- Peer appraisal
- Written clinical narrative (exemplar)
Childrens' Hospital Boston has a professional clinical advancement ladder that is based on the work of Patricia Benner and colleagues. Nursing job documents and annual review tools accompany the clinical advancement ladder. There are three professional nursing levels. Each Level (I, II, and III) is operationalized in the nursing job documents and review tools.
