Flower Orientation
All of the nurses who come to work at Children's Hospital Boston undergo a comprehensive orientation period to introduce them to the Children's team and to provide them with the information and support they need to succeed. Our orientation program includes a variety of traditional instructor-led classroom activities, on-line self-paced learning, and cutting-edge simulation experiences. Components of our comprehensive orientation include:
  • One full day of hospital orientation
  • One full day of nursing orientation in a classroom setting
  • A set of on-line nursing competencies, that you take as you need them
  • Up to 8 optional classes offered "just in time" for your practice
  • Up to 4 optional on-line courses
  • Clinical skills training in our state-of-the-art simulation labs
  • One-on-one training with a unit-based preceptor
Our unit-based orientation is highly specialized and the time frame may vary depending on the area of specialty. For example, unit-based training may be six weeks in a general medical unit; three to six months in an ICU; and up to six full months in our main operating room. Ask us about specifics in your area of specialty.
New Graduate Orientation Program

The New Graduate Orientation Program at Children's Hospital Boston is a comprehensive 22 week program. During this time new nurses are given the education and support that is needed to launch their career and successfully escort them down a path that will help them grow and develop into an independent, competent pediatric nurse. The weeks are filled with classroom style education, direct patient care, simulated learning experiences, preceptor and staff development faculty support, and ongoing evaluation.
