Assessing the Oral Bacteria in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease with and without Oral Pathology as Compared to Normal Controls

Trial Description: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of oral bacteria in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis). Inflammatory Bowel Disease is believed to be caused both by genes and various environmental factors, such as the bacteria that live in the mouth. These bacteria can be studied by sampling the tongue, cheek and saliva to learn more about the causes of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Study procedures: Participants will be asked to provide a brushing of their tongue, inner cheek and small saliva sample. Pictures of the mouth may be taken. Participants will be asked to participate up to four times over a two-year period.

Compensation: A parking voucher and $10 cash will be provided with each visit.

Recruitment Info: Children and adults from the ages of 24 months – 30 years who have been diagnosed with IBD or have symptoms suggestive of IBD. Participants may not have been on antibiotics in the 30 days before providing samples.
