When a patient comes to Children's Hospital Boston for a surgical or related procedure, there are several different types ways in which he/she may be admitted to the hospital. We notify all patients and their families ahead of time as to which type of admission they will be experiencing. Our staff will also answer any questions you may have about what to expect when your child is admitted here.
Same-day admission
Your child's procedure is performed the same day you arrive at the hospital. Your child will stay in the hospital at least one night after the procedure is completed.
Any preparatory testing will be done on a separate day before the procedure in the preoperative clinic. On the day of surgery, please plan to arrive at the Admitting Office an hour and a half before the scheduled operating time.
Inpatient admission
Your child will be admitted to the hospital before the procedure and will be assigned a room and a bed.
Outpatient procedure (day surgery)
Your child will not stay in the hospital overnight and will be discharged on the same day.
