The MOMS study (Management of Myelomeningocele Study) is a large, rigorous, randomized trial designed to determine whether prenatal surgery offers any consistent advantage. The Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons has agreed that hospitals not participating in the study should observe a moratorium on pre-natal spina bifida surgery until the results are available. The neurosurgeons at Children's Hospital will take every proven avenue to enhance the care of your child, but they are awaiting the study results before embracing intrauterine surgery for spina bifida.
