Expanding access to Children's
Children's Hospital Boston is one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States, and still, one of the biggest challenges the hospital faces is access to care. But a growth plan is now in place to help bring Children's world-class services to more patients and their families.
With Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham and the new clinical building set to open this summer, the hospital is mounting an aggressive recruitment campaign to bring in additional clinical and support staff. Over the next four years, Children's plans to recruit 56 new physicians in the ambulatory setting and 22 in the growth areas of critical care, anesthesia and radiology. To support these services, which will begin seeing patients in a matter of months, Children's is now actively seeking additional clinical and administrative staff for both Waltham and the new clinical building.
"Right now patients and their families often have to wait weeks or even months to access Children's services," says Chief Operating Officer Sandra Fenwick. "By building additional capacity—both physically and with new physicians—we hope to decrease that wait time to two weeks or less, so we can increase access to care and improve customer service."
Children's is providing significant financial support to recruit physicians who are interested in building community-based clinical practices while maintaining their connection to academic medicine. "The physicians we are recruiting, while committed to full-time patient care, will have immediate access to the latest treatments, technologies and surgical procedures through their academic connections," says Surgeon-in-Chief Alan Retik, MD.
