In memoriam Cynthia Lucero

Many at the Martha Eliot health Center (MEHC) lost a friend, and the world lost a promising clinical psychologist on April 15, when Cynthia Lucero collapsed and died while running the Boston Marathon.

Lucero, 28, a doctoral student from Ecuador and intern at MEHC, was running for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It was her second marathon. In addition to counseling women and children at Martha Elliot, she also volunteered as a Big Sister, at the Shelter for Battered Women and at several community health centers.

Says Ana Ortiz, PhD, director of Human Services at Martha Eliot: “Translated into English, her name means ‘beam of light,’ and she really was like that. She served as a model to other interns and students, and her patients truly loved her.”
