he poem below was written by Jennifer Flanders, a 16-year-old patient with cystic fibrosis.

“When I met her in pre-op hold,” says anesthesiologist Rafael Richards, MD, “she was sitting quietly in her bed writing something in her notebook. I asked her what it was, and she said it was a poem about her upcoming anesthesia. I was touched and impressed.”

Feel the breeze
The noise dies
You fall asleep

Jokes told
Laughing's gone
Life's on hold
Waiting for the dawn

Procedure's start
Careful and slow
Doctors are smart
But nurses know

Time arrives
To awake
I've survived
Time for cake
