Toy helps toddlers get “Reddy” to potty train

[ printer-friendly version ]

new toy that hit the shelves last month helps kids learn how to use the potty and gives parents some guidance and support. Called the “potty school kit,” it’s based on the work of Ann Stadtler, MSN, CPNP, director of the Brazelton Touchpoints Center at the Child Development Unit, and is produced by The First Years company. It features Reddy, the Good Habit Rabbit, who is learning to potty train on a play toilet that makes real flushing sounds.

The kit also includes a book to make children comfortable sitting on the potty, a progress chart, a certificate for making a “super effort in learning to use the potty,” and a parent’s guide that gives pointers and helpful advice. The goal, says Stadtler, is to take the pressure off of parents and children so kids can learn at their own pace.

“Parents are always told what not to do, so they get very tense about doing the wrong thing. But Reddy Rabbit gives them guidance on how to introduce potty training in a way that is supportive of children.” Reddy Rabbit’s potty school kit is available at Target stores throughout the area.—MC
