ou've
heard the name Children's
Hospital Trust a thousand times, but have you ever wondered
exactly what the Trust is? How they raise money? And how that money
is used?
The Trust was formed six years ago to boost hospital fundraising. Under the leadership of Trust President Janet Cady, gift support has grown from $13.7 million in 1997 to a record-breaking $60 million in 2001. Despite the sluggish economy, the Trust continues to generate $50 million yearly.
Behind the fundraising is a nearly 60-person staff, located at 138 Harvard Street in Brookline, focused on three main areas: major gifts, annual support, and shared services. In addition, the Trust board, composed of 32 community leaders and chaired by Steve Karp, has been pivotal to the growth in philanthropy.

At a glance In 2000, the Trust launched the five-year Cause for Wonder campaign, the hospital's first-ever comprehensive fundraising effort. In three years, the Trust has raised $170 million toward its $250 million goal. Major gifts ($50,000 or more) come from a small group of benefactors. Since the Trust became active, the hospital has receivedûan unprecedented 48 individual gifts of $1 million or more. In addition to working with individual donors, the major gifts team works with charitable foundations and corporations interested in supporting children's health.
The annual support team encompasses several areas, including special events, corporate initiatives, direct mail, and individual giving below $10,000. If you've watched the annual WBZ-Children's Hospital Telethon, participated in last year's Miles for Miracles Walk, been invited to make a contribution to Children's at a Wal Mart store, or been encouraged to donate to Children's via mail, you've been part of the annual support team's efforts.
The shared services team works behind the scenes, writing support materials, conducting research, planning donor events and processing each and every gift—last year numbering 75,000. Many of Children's donors have personal connections to the hospital and target their donations to support specific program areas. Other donors know the importance of supporting some of the hospital's neediest areas, and make their gifts to the Children's Fund.
Together, the Trust board and staff work to ensure the hospital is well funded, helping Children's care for all kids who need the hospital's compassionate, cutting-edge care while funding leading research initiatives that make us one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country.—MC
