Congratulations to Derek Carver, manager of Radiology Education and Training, who’s been selected as December’s Employee of the Month.
Students often revere an outstanding teacher, and it’s no different for the countless employees at Children’s who have had Carver as their clinical educator. Many of them rave about his teaching prowess, enthusiasm and commitment years after they’ve heard him lecture. “He brings passion and ambition to his job every day,” says a student. “He loves teaching his students and it shows.”
Since joining Children’s in 1995, Carver has been passionate about training Boston- and Waltham-based employees in the Radiologic Technology program. Students appreciate his teaching abilities first and foremost, but also his intelligence, wit and his gushing enthusiasm for the subject matter. When it comes time to organize and give them lectures, he tracks down experts and brings them in or, more often, becomes an expert in the subject himself. More than merely dedicated, he’s even interrupted his vacation to come into the hospital to give a lecture.
The biggest accolades comes from students who are so inspired by Carver’s teaching style—upbeat, pleasant and personable—that they want to emulate him. “Derek is a role model I will hold my standards to,” says one. “His attitude is what excited me during my studies and what I now carry with me daily to my job,” says another. “He teaches from the heart and is genuinely excited about what he does.”
