Worldwide care...
Three Children's Hospital Boston doctors from the Dental and Oral and Maxillofacial Services departments recently traveled to the People's Republic of China to speak at several children's hospitals. The doctors, Pediatric Dentist in Chief Emeritus, Stephan Shusterman, D.M.D., Orthodontist/Pediatric Dentist Richard Bruun, DDS, and Oral and Plastic Surgeon Bonnie Padwa, M.D., also attended the National Child Cleft Lip and Palate Therapy Seminar, where they spoke about cleft patients' transitions from infants to young adults.
Disney magic comes to Children's...
On November 16, performers from Disney Live! entertained a packed audience in the Patient Entertainment Center with Mickey's Magic Show. Children were awed by illusionist Brad Ross' tricks and they got to meet Master Magician Mickey Mouse and his best pal, Goofy.
Open doors...
The Perioperative Open House on November 4 brought together members from the Pre-Operative, Operating and Post-Operative departments. The event was held to help patients and their parents overcome anxiety about surgical procedures by letting them talk to clinicians, tour the operating rooms and even perform mock surgeries.
State-wide recognition...
Gastroenterology social worker Janis Arnold was recently nominated for the Kenneth B. Schwartz Compassionate Caregivers award. The award, which was established in 1999, honors Massachusetts caregivers who go beyond the call of duty to give exceptional care to their patients. Arnold says, "It's an honor to be invited into the lives of the families, and to be able to collaborate with a medical team that's so committed to patients." As a finalist, she received $1,000 and was recognized at the Schwartz Center's dinner on November 1.
Epilepsy grant...
Chief Emeritus of Epilepsy, Cesare Lombroso, MD, awarded a $25,000 Cesare Lombroso Trust (CLT) for Epilepsy Research grant to Delia Talos, MD, for epilepsy research. Frances Jensen, MD, is mentor to Dr. Talos. Other recent CLT awards include a Lombroso Award to the Sicilian and Brazilian branches of the International League Against Epilepsy.
And the award goes to...
Judah Folkman, MD, was one of seven exceptional physicians to receive The Crystal Ball Clearly Time Award for his outstanding work in the field of lung cancer. Envisioned by a two-time cancer survivor, this is the first gala event presented by The Lung Cancer Alliance.
