Pit Stops for Life

Patriots surprise
Two Patriots football players recently made a surprise visit to the hospital. Wide receiver Bam Childress and 6'5" linebacker Ty Warren took a break from football to spend time with the patients on the tenth floor surgical unit. The gregarious players autographed team pictures and visited with patients and family members, scoring big-time with the patients. Kirsten Fowler, a Child Life specialist, says, "The patients and families here at Children's Hospital Boston always look forward to having their heroes take some time out of their busy "play schedules" to come and share their time. Days here at the hospital can often be monotonous for patients, so a few minutes, a smile and a handshake from these sports figures can make a world of difference."

Family of scribes gives back through books
This summer, Clinical Neuropsychologist Sigmund Hough, PhD, and his 11-year-old son, Brian, a former Children's surgical patient, published the book they wrote together, Wisdom of a Parent through the Eyes of a Child, which imparts life lessons through the eyes of a father and son. In recognition of their gratitude to Children's for Brian's health, they will donate 20 percent of the book's sales to Children's. You can buy the book at Trinkets and Treasures at Children's as well as on Amazon.com.

Latino career expo
Children's Hospital Boston was a proud sponsor of the 2006 Latino Career Expo, which took place on Friday, Sept. 22 at the Courtyard Marriott in the theatre district. The Expo is a large-scale annual diversity event presented by El Mundo, the Spanish newspaper based in Boston. Approximately 2,500 jobseekers attended the event, many of whom visited Children's career booth. During the network event, Inez Stewart, V.P. of Human Resources at Children's, spoke about the importance of diversity in the workplace.

Education fair prepares patients for the future
Twenty-six local colleges, universities and technical schools participated in this year's Boston Children's Hospital Education Fair, held in the main lobby and the Patient Entertainment Center on September 28. Representatives from five trade schools, five community colleges and 16 traditional four-year institutions gave Children's patients hand-outs and answered questions. Children's Education Fair Scholarship applications were also given out to interested patients.

Deck the halls
Two exciting exhibitions are currently on display at Children's. As you enter the main lobby, you can see a unique art project Art Through a Microscope. Or take a walk through the bridge between Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's to check out Dr. George Taylor's imaginative photographs of Cape Cod on display at the "bridge" gallery.

Pit Stops for Life
Busch Series North NASCAR driver Doug Hurst and Lee USA Speedway driver Katrina Canney drove into Children's Hospital Boston to sign autographs and promote Pit Stops for Life, a blood and platelets drive for Children's Blood Donor Center. Hurst put his #43 Chevrolet Monte Carlo car on display in Children's circle, where patients and employees were able to sit in the driver's seat to get the full feel of the NASCAR experience.
