Although Children’s Hospital Boston is full of exceptional workers, one clearly stands out. In the past eight years, she’s never been out sick, hasn’t taken a single lunch break and never had a vacation. What’s more, she’s bilingual, stands four–and–a–half feet tall and weighs 600 pounds. And did we mention she’s a robot?
Gizmo is a peculiar, though now familiar, sight at Children’s. She travels to each inpatient unit daily, systematically retrieving the records of discharged patients. And she securely safeguards her cargo, transporting files via a backpack–type vault built into her body. Only an authorized fingerprint–one that has been stored into her memory–can open the door to the vault. Mary Radley, director of Medical Records, estimates that using Gizmo to transport records frees up about four hours of human time every day.
After so many years of service, Gizmo was recently treated to a special gift: a brand new outfit to replace the one she got when she first took the job eight years ago. Her new colorful display of bolts, buttons and gears is the same style she’s always worn, but are bright and fresh. As you can see here, some looks never go out of style. Just like Gizmo.
