| Geraldine Mitchell |
Congratulations to Geraldine Mitchell, clinical assistant (CA) in the Cardiac Operating Room, who's been selected as Children's Hospital Boston's Employee of the Month for October.
It's not often that a CA—or any employee, for that matter—is referred to as a "fairy godmother" by grateful coworkers. But for three years, Mitchell has played that role, fulfilling nurses' and managers' wishes by setting up the OR exquisitely, stocking to perfection and ensuring that the proper equipment is always in place. Flexible and enthusiastic, Mitchell supports the flow of the unit, cheerfully following through on every task. "There's never a worry that what's needed won't be available when Geraldine takes the lead," says a colleague.
Mitchell's coworkers have come to depend on her as an invaluable team member; when the department recently had a resignation that left her as the only CA, Mitchell seamlessly assumed the double workload for four months while they hired a replacement. Now, she's taken the new CA under her wing, sharing information and ensuring her success. "She's considered the 6th man, the 10th player," says another coworker. "She's instrumental in uniting colleagues, which impacts positive patient outcomes. Her courtesy, enthusiasm and drive should be a model for all."
