Bienvenido al Children's

The number of Children's Hospital Boston's Latino employees and patients continues to climb, reflecting Boston's growing Latino population. In an effort to reach out to this vital part of our community, Children's has just launched a Spanish Web site that includes hundreds of pages of content, including:

  • An overview of our clinical services with phone numbers and contact information
  • Suggestions about how to help a family prepare for a child's visit or hospitalization
  • Information about our support services, such as the Center for Families, Child Life and Interpreter Services
  • Career information describing how to apply for jobs at Children's and details about our benefits
  • Articles about our Latino employees and some inspiring patient stories
  • News releases
  • Information for international visitors
  • Directions, locations and parking information

Latino Heritage events

  • Salsa cruise along Boston Harbor
    Sept. 16
  • The Cafe will serve Latin American dishes each day Oct. 1 to 5
  • Mango Blue A local Latin jazz group, will entertain listeners in the Cafe Oct. 2, noon to 1 p.m.
  • Community Fair Local agencies that focus on serving the Hispanic community will present information about the services they provide to Latino families. Oct. 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in themain lobby.
  • Traditional dances of Latin America A local children's dance group will perform on Oct. 8, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Patient Entertainment Center.
  • Awards Ceremony The annual lecture and awards ceremony is open to the whole hospital community. Jarrett Barrios, former senator of Massachusetts and current president of the Blue Cross Blue Shield foundation, will be the keynote speaker. During the ceremony, three Children's Hispanic achievers will be presented with Hispanic achiever awards by the Latino Heritage committee. Oct. 9, noon to 1 p.m. in Enders Auditorium.

The site will also feature video health tips in Spanish, which will hopefully open a channel of communication with Latino families living regionally, nationally and internationally. In the videos, Children's Spanish-speaking doctors, nurses and specialists give tips on asthma management, mental health, nutrition and fitness, and injury prevention. These videos will also air on Univision, New England's largest Spanish-language television station.

"Departments across the hospital have been working on this project together for many months," says Anne Speakman, director of Marketing. "We want to connect with our Spanish-speaking patients, families, employees and the community we serve, and the new Web site will ensure that people know about our services, the exceptional care we provide and what a great place it is to work."

The launch coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from mid-September to mid-October. This year's festivities at Children's promise to be bigger and better than ever. "The celebration is an exciting opportunity for our employees to showcase and celebrate their cultural heritage," says Elvira Paulino, director of diversity. "This year's events will involve not only our employees, but also our patients, with a dance performance and Latin American food in the Cafe. It's a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about the variety of cultures represented at Children's." For a full list of events, see above.
