Raising their voices

Two clinicians from Children's Hospital Boston recently testified on behalf of two important pieces of legislation, one federal and one state.

George Daley, MD, PhD, associate director of Children's Stem Cell/Developmental Biology Program (left), traveled to Washington, DC, to testify on Capitol Hill before the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services. Daley spoke about alternative methods for obtaining embryonic stem cells, voicing his support for legislation that, if passed, would expand the number of federally permitted embryonic stem cell lines. Stephanie Packard, RN, a nurse in Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit testified at a legislative hearing on Beacon Hill in support of the "Act to Promote Safe Patient Care and Support the Nursing Profession" bill, which addresses nurse-to-patient ratios. "It was great to testify in support of a bill that recognizes that nurses at the bedside need the ability to make staffing decisions that are guided by minute-to-minute changes in a patient's condition, not by a rigid ratio mandated by law," says Packard.
