Sandy competition
On August 3, Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham hosted its very first sandcastle sculpture event for patients, families and staff in the newly renovated OR department. Thirteen artists participated, creating one-of-a-kind sandcastles with the help of several young patients. One of the artists, Lucinda Wierenga, is a professional sandcastle sculptor and participates in competitions throughout the world. Her creation, which she named Sandy Feet, used 30 gallons of sand and will remain permanently on display in the OR.

Take me out to the ballgame
On July 31, eight Children's Hospital Boston patients and their families were treated to something special: a meet-and-greet with Sox star Trot Nixon and seats at a Red Sox game, courtesy of Nixon's Trot's Troops program. Before the game, Nixon signed autographs and posed for pictures with the children, who all got a Red Sox hat, a Nixon photograph and a baseball. The families then settled in to watch the Sox battle the Cleveland Indians, which turned out to be a thrilling game ending with a 9-8 win for the hometown team.
