IT upgrades promise improvements

[ printer-friendly version ]

everal new initiatives will improve patient management, patient accounting and medical record management capabilities. Known as “REACH,” for Realizing Epic at Children’s Hospital, the changes include the rollout of new software and the upgrade of current applications from Epic Systems Corporation. Benefits of the changes will include a shared application for all non-clinical patient management tasks, more efficient online tools and improved communication throughout the hospital. The upgrades will include:

Cadence
Behind-the-scenes changes to Cadence, the backbone of appointment scheduling, have made the application compatible with a new graphical user interface that will look more like a Web page and be easier to navigate and use. The interface, known as “Hyperspace,” will begin appearing on workstations in mid-September.

Health Information Management (HIM)
New HIM applications will streamline chart/medical records management processes and make it easier to comply with new HIPAA privacy standards. The IT team working on HIM is currently designing and building the applications, and the system will be thoroughly tested prior to its November debut.

Hospital Information System (HIS)
Two new applications, Prelude/ADT and Resolute, will replace the patient access and patient accounting system Allegra. Prelude/ADT will be used for registration, admission, discharge, and transfers, while Resolute will handle patient billing. Representatives from each area that will use the systems had input into their design, and more than 75 Children’s employees developed the procedural changes that will be made when the software rolls out.

The HIS applications are scheduled to be ready for use beginning in March. Look for more information on each of these upgrades in future issues of Children’s News.
