Be prepared

Over 200 members of the Boston Fire Department participated in a training session and orientation of Children's Hospital Boston's new Bio-Safety Level 3 laboratory over the week of July 17. Led by Barb Ernisse, the bio-safety officer for the hospital, Rusty Lorenzen, MS, of Research Operations, and Deputy Chief Peter Pearson, of the Boston Fire Department, the firefighters learned what materials are handled, and the safety precautions to take if called upon in an emergency situation that involved the lab. "We hope to offer further training in the future," Lorenzen says. "It was a great exchange of information between Children's and the fire department, and it was very positively received."
