Pit Stops for Life
On Friday, June 3, NASCAR Busch North driver Doug Hurst (pictured) brought his #43 Chevrolet Monte Carlo race car to Children's Hospital Boston—the latest stop in his "Pit Stops for Life" campaign. Parking his car in the Children's parking circle for several hours, Hurst let anyone and everyone climb through the window and into the driver's seat including PJ Ciarfella (left), for a taste of what it feels like to be behind the wheel of a real race car. The visit helped raise awareness of the hospital's constant need of blood and platelet donors. To schedule an appointment at the Blood Donor Center, call (617) 355-6677.

Not monkeying around
The Franklin Park Zoo called on the expertise of Mark Waltzman, MD, a physician in Children's Hospital Boston's Emergency Medicine Department, last month to evaluate a 5-month-old gorilla (right), who they suspected had a metabolic bone disorder. Working with Eleanor Menzin, MD, a physician from Longwood Pediatrics, Waltzman took X-rays and drew blood from the gorilla, sending her samples to Children's Clinical Laboratories for testing. The results showed that she was suffering from low calcium levels, most-likely due to a vitamin D deficiency. The gorilla is doing well after receiving intravenous calcium, followed by oral vitamin D and calcium daily.

Dream Night at the Zoo
The Franklin Park Zoo opened its doors free-of-charge to patients and families from Children's Hospital Boston and the Jimmy Fund Clinic on Saturday, June 11, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The children and their families met the zoo's animal residents and zookeepers, and enjoyed live entertainment from Radio Disney, free food and parking, and goodie bags. Jack Culhane (pictured), a patient in Children's Allergy Program, attended the event with his brother, Andy, and his parents, Susan and Chris.
