Former frat house provides home for families

Sankara Orkin

On June 1, after a year of renovations, the Family Inn at 241 Kent Street officially opened. Just blocks away from Children’s Hospital Boston, the home offers significantly increased housing options for out-of-area patient families during their child’s extended hospitalization.

In 2004, Children’s opened the Devon Nicole House to provide affordable accommodations for up to 13 families while their children received medical care. Since then, more than 1,800 families from all over the world have stayed there. Over the past few years, the Center for Families has received as many as 50 requests a day for housing assistance. The urgent need for increased housing became apparent, so to meet that need, Children’s acquired 241 Kent Street from a Northeastern University fraternity. It’s since been transformed into a home for patient families with 22 bedrooms, shared bathrooms, common areas, a kitchen, a dining area and a playroom, and is staffed 24 hours a day.

For more information, visit childrenshospital.org/dnh, talk to a social worker or visit the Center for Families. As of June 15, the number for the Patient Family Housing Program will be 617-919-3450.
