The resource rooms, kitchens and family rooms will be filled with unique art created by 30 members of the Children's community.

World Asthma Day

Children's hosted the fifth annual World Asthma Day Community Health Fair on May 21. Asthma and health information was given to patients, families and staff by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Lung Association, the Boston Urban Asthma Coalition and the Boston Asthma Initiative. There was also an "Ask the Expert" booth staffed by nurses and nurse practitioners to answer questions about asthma.

Making Boston shine

Children's participated in Mayor Menino's annual Boston Shines city-wide cleanup day with eight other Longwood Medical Area institutions. More than $3,000 in supplies, services and refreshments were donated by the institutions to help support business in Mission Hill and aide the cleanup effort.

National Postdoctoral Association event

Children's co-hosted the Sixth Annual National Postdoctoral Association meeting. The NPA serves as a national voice for career development for postdoctoral research and fellows across the country. Children's employees had representation at four workshops, including work-family balance, obtaining a successful fellowship and meeting the needs of international post-docs. A reception and awards ceremony concluded the weekend.

Donor of the month

Congratulations to Children's June Blood Donor of the Month, Carl Stankiewicz. He's not only donated more than 10 gallons of blood at Children's, but he's also been hosting Bloodmobile drives at his work, Axcelis Technologies in Beverly, for the past two years. His drives have collected more than 300 pints for the patients at Children's.

The Axcelis Technologies drives are successful not only because the employees are a giving group of people, but also because Stankiewicz is a great organizer and passionate about encouraging others to give blood. A board member of Axcelis Cares, a group of employees who fundraise for organizations like the United Way, Stankiewicz says he sees his work on the blood drives as "a way for me to give back that much more."

Stankiewicz began donating platelets in 2003. "A very special little boy in my life was being treated for leukemia," he says. "Platelets are always in demand and they have such a short shelf life. I would hate to find out there wasn't a bag available for a kid who needed it." Platelets last only five days after donation, which explains why there is always a demand for this type of donation. "It's not a lot of time out of your life, but it helps a child have a normal life."

If you're interested in giving a simple gift that can help up to four patients at Children's, or would like more information donating blood, call the Blood Donor Center at ext. 5-6677.
