Phone number switch

Currently, Children's Hospital Boston has more than 9,400 telephones installed using the 617-355-xxxx exchange. Shortly, we'll exhaust our remaining 355 numbers, so ISD has requested a large block of numbers from Verizon to support our growth. Unfortunately, Verizon doesn't have any more numbers in the 617 area code available, so many Children's locations will be transitioning to the new 857 area code and 218 exchange (857-218-xxxx). When this goes into effect, callers from the outside will dial the entire 10 digit number. Internal callers will be able to use five digit dialing for the new exchange by dialing 8-xxxx.¬Ý

The intent is to use the remaining 355 phone numbers for only inpatient and clinical areas and reclaim the old ones from administrators. Staff at 1295 Boylston Street and the Autumn Street locations will get new 857-218-xxxx numbers beginning in mid June. Additional future conversions in other locations may be necessary. Main department numbers and other critical numbers may not be converted to the new exchange. Old numbers will be forwarded to the new numbers for three months to help ease the transition.

If you have questions or concerns please email commrequest@childrens.harvard.edu or call ext. 5-8444.
