It's nothing short of amazing to see all the activities Lauren Norton does—gymnastics, horseback riding, bowling and ballet—considering that she was gravely ill when she was born. When Lauren was just hours old, she wasn't getting enough oxygen because the large vessels that transport blood from her heart to her lungs were misconnected. During the next four days, she had two seizures, a stroke and then, after being transferred to Children's Hospital Boston, underwent heart surgery. Five years later, Lauren is an active, energetic 5-year-old girl.
To thank Children's for saving her daughter's life, Lauren's mother, Karen, added another item to Lauren's list of activities: participating in Children's annual pledge walk with the rest of her family. And this year, Lauren's efforts will be supported by NSTAR, which is putting its energy into fundraising for Children's. To recognize its major commitment to the walk, Children's has renamed the walk itself to NSTAR's Walk for Children's Hospital Boston. "NSTAR's gift demonstrates its deep commitment to children, and the powerful impact corporate support can have on our community," says James Mandell, MD, president and CEO.
For the Nortons, the walk is a family event, and last year they raised more than $5,000. Norton is excited about NSTAR's sponsorship, since the increased awareness it will bring will generate more funds to help children receive the gift of life. "You never know when your family or friends will need Children's," she says. "It happens unexpectedly. Walking is a great way to help other kids and someday maybe your own."
