Ludwik Szymanski, MD,
Department of Medicine

Having newly completed his training in child psychiatry, Ludwik Szymanski joined the charter group forming the Developmental Evaluation Center in 1967 (Department of Medicine). He has been a central figure on that staff for the subsequent 35 years, known for his kindness, humor, and devotion. Ludwik had a special outreach to children with disabilities who were having emotional or behavioral issues. He helped to establish this area as a field, both locally and nationally, while assisting thousands of children and families. He influenced the psychiatric profession’s commitment to this previously poorly served group of young people. He wrote the first book and dozens of articles and chapters.
