Samuel E. Lux, MD, a consummate physician scientist, has served Children’s brilliantly in many capacities over the past 30 years. A product of the pediatric hematology training program himself, Dr. Lux has led the Division of Hematology for more than 17 years—during which time he has distinguished himself as forceful and effective recruiter of the best young talent in the field. His knowledge of the background and interests of Harvard medical students, Children’s house staff, and fellows is legendary. He has given of himself as a planner and building consultant, providing unmatched attention to critical details in the design of the present hospital and Enders building, as well as the new research building under construction. As a teacher, he is unrivalled, having won HMS teachings awards several times. Finally, as an investigator his research has defined the underlying causes of red blood cell membrane disorders. Dr. Lux is one of the last of the “triple threats,” those rare physicians who function equally well in clinical medicine, teaching, and research. Congratulations to one of the very best in medicine.
