Scout Update: Where do you throw away computer equipment?
Computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), floppy disks, CD-ROMs, backup tapes, USB memory sticks, and even paper computer printouts can all contain electronic protected health information or other confidential information. Even if files are deleted or a computer hard drive is reformatted, it's still possible for the files to be easily recovered. Therefore, it's important to dispose of these items securely.
Below is a list of disposable items and how to have them removed from your workspace:
- Computers or PDAs: Email the Help Desk or submit request on eHelp, including the census number, the location, and contact person and phone number. The Help Desk will arrange for the device to be picked up.
- Hard drives, CDs, USB memory sticks, floppy disks, backup tapes: Drop items off in the Information Services Staging Department at the bin in front of MA 0014.5 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Paper printouts: Deposit items in one of locked recycle bins throughout the hospital.
The hospital will cover the cost of all disposals. If you have any questions about how to dispose of computer equipment, visit http://ehelp/ or contact the Help Desk.
NOTE: The deadline for compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule is fast approaching—April 20, 2005. Stay tuned for news about HIPAA Security Training.
