Senator Kerry visits Children's
Senator John Kerry (D-MA) held a press conference at Children's Hospital Boston on Monday, Feb. 7 to announce the Kids Come First Act—legislation to expand health insurance eligibility and coverage for children. Kerry spoke at length about his commitment to building an affordable, comprehensive system of care for all children.
Under Kerry's proposal, the federal and state governments would share responsibility for financing the expansion, which he insists can be done. "Could we cover every single child in America tomorrow?" asks Kerry. "Yes. We simply have to make a different set of choices."
Joining Senator Kerry at the press event was Shari Nethersole, MD, medical director for Community Health in Children's Office of Child Advocacy, and a pediatrician in the Primary Care Center. Nethersole spoke about her experience as a pediatrician and the importance of making sure children having consistent access to primary care. In addition, Dayanne Leal from Health Care for All gave her perspective as an advocate making sure families get connected to health insurance programs.
During his visit, Senator Kerry had a chance to tour the hospital's new clinical building. He also paid a personal visit to patients on 7 West with the help of Child Life Services.
