Glad you asked

This column is a new forum for Children's Hospital Boston employees to get answers to questions they have about the hospital. If you have a question about any aspect of the hospital, send it to news@childrens.harvard.edu. We'll ask the appropriate person to answer the most commonly asked questions and print their responses. (You can submit questions anonymously.)

Question: "I was wondering why Children's does not discard the Back Bay shuttle and send buses to South Station? More trains skip Back Bay and Ruggles when they come from the south and west. I know that my train skips Ruggles many times in’ÄØthe morning and a few times in the afternoon. I wanted to know if this in the works?"

A number of employees have expressed interest in shuttle service from South Station and we have explored this in the past. A big part of making any decision around adding shuttle or other commuter options has to do with how well we would be able to service the employees it would benefit.

Back Bay, for instance, didn't really become popular until we doubled the number of shuttles available, so it was a practical option for commuters to use. Because of the length of the route and the traffic congestion around South Station, we determined that unless we created an expansive shuttle program around South Station specifically, we wouldn't be able to get buses there frequently enough to be of use to the commuter rail riders.

One bus an hour during rush hour didn't seem to meet the need and the MBTA already services the area much more thoroughly than we are presently able. We will, of course, continue to review this and look for the right solution to provide this enhancement for our South Station riders.

’ÄØThanks for asking!
