The following excerpt of a letter was sent to Myra Fox, director of Child Life Services. It came from Brian Ridley, who stayed at Children's Hospital Boston for many months in 1966 when he was critically ill as a young boy. After four decades, Brian still remembers "the play lady," as Fox has been called by patients and staff alike since being featured in Curious George Goes to the Hospital.
And, as it turns out, Brian made just as lasting an impression on Fox. When she got his letter, she went right to the folder in which she'd kept his picture all these years. She called him up and the result was a reunion lunch that took place in January, when Brian, and his mother, Elizabeth, and Myra met and shared memories.
Hello Ms. Fox,
I was at Children's for almost four months, and that was 41 years ago. As a young boy, I went through some tough times, health-wise. My mother was watching Chronicle [recently] and heard your name mentioned. I couldn't believe you were still working at Children's! I have never forgotten you—the play lady. Most of all I remember one Christmas when I was in a private room and was pretty sick. One day, I woke up and my room was all decorated for Christmas, with a tree and all, and you were there. On Christmas Eve, we even had a party at the front desk and the nurses had brought me some presents.
You were always stopping by and checking on me. I'm sure there are a lot of young kids you've seen over the years that you have touched and I'm sure the play lady has put thousands of smiles on young faces. I would just like to say "thank you" for putting a smile on my face when I needed it.
