Shamberger named head of Surgery

n December 18, Children’s announced the appointment of Robert Shamberger, MD, as the new chief of Surgery and the general surgeon-in-chief. Shamberger, who has been serving as the interim chief for the past year and a half, was named to the position following a competitive, year-long national search.

A pediatric surgeon specializing in oncology, inflammatory bowel disease, and chest wall deformities, Shamberger has spent the past 20 years of his career at Children’s, beginning with a surgical residency in 1983 and advancing to chief resident the following year. Prior to that, he completed his general surgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School.

Shamberger’s goals as chief include strengthening the department’s training program, bolstering current programs and developing new surgical initiatives, particularly in minimally invasive surgery and solid organ transplantation. He also plans to enhance the department’s research program by fostering rapid translation of discoveries from laboratory to bedside.
